Adrenal Function Panel Blood Test
Test subject must be 18 years or older.
Stressed? Check your adrenal function
Do you have difficulty sleeping, wake up tired, and need coffee or other stimulants to get through your day? If this sounds familiar, understanding your adrenal function is essential.
The main purpose of your adrenal glands is to enable your body to deal with stress from every possible source. They determine your body's responses to every change in your environment. Whether they signal — "fight" or "flight" — every cell responds accordingly, and you feel the results.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself:
- Are you gaining weight around the middle that just won't come off?
- Do you crave "comfort foods" high in sugar and fat?
- Do you have problems sleeping and wake up tired all the time?
- Do you need coffee to get you going in the morning?
- Are you getting sick more than usual?
- Feeling depressed?
- Memory problems?
If the answer is YES, you may have an adrenal problem!
This panel requires two blood draws. One blood draw will be performed at approximately 8 a.m. after you have been fasting for 8 to 12 hours. (Please drink water in order to stay hydrated and take all medications as prescribed.)
You will return to the laboratory at approximately 4 p.m. (or as late in the afternoon as possible) for the second blood draw of a second cortisol specimen. Since cortisol production is highest in the morning and falls as the day progresses, two cortisol results in the same day are the most helpful in evaluating adrenal function.
NOTE: Blood tests are available only in the contiguous United States and Anchorage, AK. Not available in Maryland. Your blood test requisition options are a LabCorp requisition form or a blood draw kit. Certain restrictions apply for residents of MA, NY, NJ, RI, and PA. Customers in MA, NY, NJ, and RI will receive a blood draw kit, and an additional local blood draw fee may be incurred. PA customers must go to LabCorp for their blood draw.
